Spyware, although generally used as a broad term, actually refers to software that “spies” on you. Basically, it collects information about you and sends the information to its creator. It all depends what the spyware has been programmed to gather, and how it has managed to infiltrate your computer. Its creator may only be interested in your browsing and purchase history, in order to gather information for market research companies (still an unethical way of doing it, of course). Or its owner may be interested in your passwords and logons for websites, computer, or even your banking. Part of the reason spyware can slow your computer down so much is precisely because it’s always watching and recording. It may even be recording your keystrokes and looking out for something important.
It goes without saying that you need spyware removal, because no one should allow spyware to remain on their computer, even if it is harmless.
